Art Grants for Da Vinci’s Pawnshop!

Open through September 30th - Don't delay, submit now!

Black Rock East and Boston Decompression are pleased to announce the continuation of the Art Grant Program in 2016! Last year, 7 projects were funded and $2,205.00 in grant funds were given out. We hope to fund more projects this year, so get your art and performance ideas out of hock and apply for an art grant!

To apply for a grant to fund materials and costs to bring a new, or existing project or performance to Boston Decompression in 2016, please fill out the online application form below with the details of your proposal. The grants committee will be considering proposals for new and existing works of interactive visual and performance art, in any medium. Work that is responsive to this year's theme: Da Vinci’s Pawnshop, or helps to transform the space will be given priority consideration. Grants will be up to $500, and will primarily fund the materials and consumables costs for artwork and performance. Grant funds are available for transportation of non-local (outside the greater Boston or Worcester area) art. The Decompression Art Committee will work with Boston and Worcester area artists to arrange shared transportation for local projects.

Due to the late start on Art Grants this year, the Art Grants Committee is introducing a rolling grants application and notification process. Submit your completed Art Grant form any time until the September 30th deadline, and you will be notified within 3 days. Complete submissions received on September 30th will be notified October 4th at noon.

Here is the timeline for the art grants process:

  • Art Grant Submissions Open: Now!
  • Art Grant Submission Period: Friday, September 16th - Friday, September 30th, 11:59 PM
  • Art Grant Recipients Notification Period: Within three days of a complete Art Grant Submission - Tuesday, October 4th at noon
  • Following the return of the signed Grant Contract, the first 75% of granted funds is paid out by Friday, October 7th
  • Complete the funded project for Boston Decompression 2016 - Saturday, October 22nd!
  • After successful presentation of the project at Decompression, and the grantee has provided documentation of the project at Decompression, the remaining 25% of grant funds will be disbursed - by Saturday, November 5th, 2016

If you are the recipient of an art grant, you will receive 75-percent of your grant amount upon confirmation and return of the signed contract. Funds will be transferred to the recipient via Paypal or check. The remaining 25-percent of the grant amount will be delivered to the recipient within two weeks of the 2016 Decompression event in which the funded project has been featured and/or contributed, pending documentation of the grant-funded project.

Online Art Grant Submission Application: http://ow.ly/gysV304i4uZ

Please note, this form is intended only for those applying for an art grant. The general call for art and participation went out earlier this week. There will be a venue visit and walkthrough opportunity later in September. Stay tuned to this channel for updates.

A Word on Transportation Efforts

Holding Boston Decompression in Worcester poses logistical challenges for our Planning Committee, our artists and our participant attendees. To help navigate this our Transportation Committee is working on setting up various solutions, including: round-trip bussing between Boston and Worcester, round-trip shuttle between the Worcester “T” stop and the venue for commuter rail riders, and an event rideshare board resource; in addition to collecting and coalescing all transport information, train times, bus schedules etc. into one place for easy reference. We will be posting all of this information in a separate announcement once it’s been finalized. Additionally we will be organizing a community art truck to transport art to and from the venue.

WARNING: COUNTERFEIT MIMESIS TICKETS ARE CIRCULATING!!!

Ticketing Fraud!ATTENTION all those attending Boston Decompression 2015: Mimesis! We have just received confirmation that a group of imposters are selling counterfeit tickets to Mimesis! Please be wary when purchasing any physical ticket from any individual claiming to be an official representative of Boston Decompression: Mimesis. These fraudulent tickets may appear totally legit at first view, but in many cases they are actually counterfeit replicas of the real thing. If you suspect that you might be in possession of a counterfeit ticket, we urge you to please take a photo of yourself with the questionable ticket and SEND YOUR PHOTO TO US at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. We will use your photo to verify the authenticity of the ticket and also confirm the real identity of the individual who bought the ticket. NOTE: If your ticket is found to be counterfeit, or you yourself are confirmed to be an imposter we will repost your photo on our website and event pages to warn others! Don’t let this happen to you!

100% AUTHENTIC TICKETS TO MIMESIS CAN BE PURCHASED HERE:

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/boston-decompression-2015-mimesis-tickets-18986075864

We first became aware of a potential counterfeit operation when Homeland Security tipped us off to some strange online activity originating out of Cuba. After having an individual send us an authentication photo we realized we were dealing with a real fraud. However, it wasn’t until we got another confirmed case, this time right in the metro-Boston area involving a counterfeit ticket in the possession of a cat, that we realized we may have a much bigger problem on our hands. We need your photos to help us determine the size and scale of this counterfeit-imposter operation, so please send us your photo!

Photo identification of these first two confirmed imposters can be seen at the following link on our website, and additional photos sent to us will be posted there. Please take a look, as these photos may help you in determining the true originals from the inauthentic as we go forward:

Please get your tickets to Mimesis NOW, and beware of imitations and impostors!

Mimesis Counterfeits and Impostors!

We need YOUR photos to help us determine the size and scale of this counterfeit-impostor operation! Please SEND YOUR PHOTO TO This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Watch out for these confirmed counterfeits and impostors:

Impostor photo send in from Cuba!

We first became aware of a potential counterfeit operation when Homeland Security tipped us off to some strange online activity originating out of Cuba. After having an individual send us an authentication photo we realized we were dealing with a true fraud.

Counterfeit ticket held by a cat!

It wasn’t until we got another confirmed case, this time right in the metro-Boston area involving a counterfeit ticket in the possession of a cat, that we realized we may have a much bigger problem on our hands.

We are now facing a substantial cyber-security threat with the infiltration of bots! They pretend to be real people in order to fool our ticketing system.

Go buy your TICKETS before the bots get them all!!!

Real human or BOT?

On Halloween night there was more fiendish activity! We thought that ghosts and ghouls were only a representation of our imagination. Is this the real thing?

A "real" ghoul?

Just when we were getting a handle on who we could trust, a betrayal from our nearest neighbor to the north! Many wonderful Canadian friends have participated in Boston Decompression, but is this one a true friend, or truly a frenemy?

Northern Exploiter

Ticket scarcity! -- Wow, that didn't take long! Mimesis presale tickets just SOLD OUT, and there are already hucksters and frauds about peddling genuine counterfeits! Don't be like this imposter, you still have a chance to get in to Mimesis. There will be a LIMITED number of tickets available at the door for $30. So get there EARLY! Doors are at 7 PM!

Burn Adventure Photos Needed for Slideshow Project

Send us your burn photos!

Did you take photos while out on adventure at burn events this year?

We are asking fellow explorers to contribute photo documentation of the adventures that were had at the various burns of this past year. Like last year, contributed photos will be compiled and arranged by our trusty guide Pretzel into the 2014 Decompression Photo Slideshow Project to be presented at THE LOST CITY. Photos may be from Burning Man itself or from one of the various regional burns like Firefly, Playa del Fuego, Frostburn, Transformus, or other related event. So rustle up those pictures and send them to: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Look for the slideshow at THE LOST CITY on Saturday, November 8th.

We need YOU to Volunteer at Decompression 2014!

It will take many to build The Lost City

Boston is building The Lost City on November 8th and we need you to get down and dirty to help make it happen!

Help make this Boston's biggest and best Decompression. No matter who you are or what your skills may be—or how much time you may have—you can play an integral part in making this event an unbelievable success.

We want YOU! If you're interested in participating in one or more of the below roles, contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or fill out this form and our friendly Volunteer Wranglers will get you sorted.

Set up:

Help us transform “Who's On First?” into The Lost City. This includes preparing and decorating the venue, unloading the art and gear trucks, as well as potentially assisting artists in setting up their installations. Transformation of the space will be an all-day affair, so every hand helps. (Time commitment: 3 hours or more prior to the event)

Greeters:

It's not just a "Burning Man" event because of those 10 Principles or all those eye-popping costumes. It's because everyone who enters Boston Decompression is welcomed with open arms—literally. Ok, hugs are entirely optional but if you want to play an active role in ensuring all participants feel as if they truly belong from the time they walk in, you will absolutely love being a Greeter. (Time commitment: 1 hour during the event)

Food:

If you love arranging the food on your plate or just like to play with your food, this job is for you. Our snack buffet table will feed carnivores and herbivores throughout the night, and we need individuals to help not only with setup, but replenishment throughout the evening. (Time commitment: 1–2 hours before event, or a 2 hour maintenance shift during the event)

Strike / Leave No Trace:

We set up and we break down—and leave everything better than we found it. Beginning at 1AM in the alley and in the garage, we need many organized hands to help take down all decor and installations, as well as heavy lifting hands to reload the art truck. Boston Decompression is a Leave No Trace event, so we also need hands to do MOOP/trash sweeps during breakdown. (Time commitment: 2-3 hours after the event)

Art Truck Load In - Friday evening:

Art Truck Unload - Sunday:

You love moving heavy things and you enjoy working up a sweat, but you can load and unload objects into a truck with the finesse of a world-class puzzle master. Help Friday evening, Sunday, or both days and party in between. Load in and unload will be at several stops in Boston and Somerville, so having your own transportation or a ride is necessary. (Time commitment: 2-4 hours on Friday evening, 2 hours on Sunday)

Fill out this form to get started!

Thanks for being awesome!
