Boston Decompression 2016 Cancelled

Dear Decompression Dreamers,

Our grand dream of opening our own little renaissance pawn shop has gone bust! Sadly, like many wonderful ideas throughout history, this one will have to be put back onto the shelf to be realized another day. Our team of volunteers and venue scouts has spent a great deal of time looking for an available venue and a date to host this year’s Boston Decompression to no avail.

With the holiday season and winter now closing in on us, and very little promising leads having come from our search efforts - we have decided to call it off for this year’s iteration and instead refocus our efforts on a future event. We believe that a longer timeline will create space for planning, and may also help to open up opportunities with venues we already have relationships with. And so for a few of us, our planning efforts will continue in earnest, but for our entire group of volunteers, planners and dreamers, we would like to apologize deeply for the disappointment that this unfortunate announcement is sure to bring.

Also, note the 2015 Boston Decompression report for Mimesis is up if you would like to take a look and see what the planning committee does and possibly think about getting involved in the future:  http://bit.ly/2glyHRF

POSTPONED: Boston Decompression 2016 (& Venue Visit for 10/6 Cancelled)

Due to some delays in the permitting process with the City of Worcester, the 2016 Boston Decompression Planning Committee must regretfully announce we are POSTPONING Boston Decompression 2016: DaVinci’s Pawnshop which was to take place on October 22nd.

While we are disappointed to POSTPONE Boston Decompression, by deferring the event until later this Fall, we will be able to work together to address the permitting issues, create more art, tinker with bigger machines, and fill our Pawnshop with more wonders!

We are pleased to say we have options for a new date, and will be working hard to lock down the temporal location of our Pawnshop. Check your message receiving contraptions for details early next week. DaVinci’s Pawnshop won’t close up shop over this - we’re only moving the opening day a little later!

Clearly this means the venue visit and walk-through which were planned for this evening (Thursday October 6th) must be cancelled at this time. We will be rescheduling an opportunity for participants and contributors to see the venue at a later date.

We deeply apologize for all of the inconvenience this postponement will cause, and we ask that you understand and bear with us as we move forward to keep this important regional Decompression going for the Boston, New England, and northeast communities.

Finally, we’d like to emphasize that everyone involved in planning Decompression is a volunteer, and we need more help. Are you familiar with Decompressions and Burning Man’s culture and 10 Principles? Do you have a talent for planning and hosting events?... Contact the planning committee at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to join our team - help make Decompression happen!

Art Grants for Da Vinci’s Pawnshop!

Open through September 30th - Don't delay, submit now!

Black Rock East and Boston Decompression are pleased to announce the continuation of the Art Grant Program in 2016! Last year, 7 projects were funded and $2,205.00 in grant funds were given out. We hope to fund more projects this year, so get your art and performance ideas out of hock and apply for an art grant!

To apply for a grant to fund materials and costs to bring a new, or existing project or performance to Boston Decompression in 2016, please fill out the online application form below with the details of your proposal. The grants committee will be considering proposals for new and existing works of interactive visual and performance art, in any medium. Work that is responsive to this year's theme: Da Vinci’s Pawnshop, or helps to transform the space will be given priority consideration. Grants will be up to $500, and will primarily fund the materials and consumables costs for artwork and performance. Grant funds are available for transportation of non-local (outside the greater Boston or Worcester area) art. The Decompression Art Committee will work with Boston and Worcester area artists to arrange shared transportation for local projects.

Due to the late start on Art Grants this year, the Art Grants Committee is introducing a rolling grants application and notification process. Submit your completed Art Grant form any time until the September 30th deadline, and you will be notified within 3 days. Complete submissions received on September 30th will be notified October 4th at noon.

Here is the timeline for the art grants process:

  • Art Grant Submissions Open: Now!
  • Art Grant Submission Period: Friday, September 16th - Friday, September 30th, 11:59 PM
  • Art Grant Recipients Notification Period: Within three days of a complete Art Grant Submission - Tuesday, October 4th at noon
  • Following the return of the signed Grant Contract, the first 75% of granted funds is paid out by Friday, October 7th
  • Complete the funded project for Boston Decompression 2016 - Saturday, October 22nd!
  • After successful presentation of the project at Decompression, and the grantee has provided documentation of the project at Decompression, the remaining 25% of grant funds will be disbursed - by Saturday, November 5th, 2016

If you are the recipient of an art grant, you will receive 75-percent of your grant amount upon confirmation and return of the signed contract. Funds will be transferred to the recipient via Paypal or check. The remaining 25-percent of the grant amount will be delivered to the recipient within two weeks of the 2016 Decompression event in which the funded project has been featured and/or contributed, pending documentation of the grant-funded project.

Online Art Grant Submission Application: http://ow.ly/gysV304i4uZ

Please note, this form is intended only for those applying for an art grant. The general call for art and participation went out earlier this week. There will be a venue visit and walkthrough opportunity later in September. Stay tuned to this channel for updates.

A Word on Transportation Efforts

Holding Boston Decompression in Worcester poses logistical challenges for our Planning Committee, our artists and our participant attendees. To help navigate this our Transportation Committee is working on setting up various solutions, including: round-trip bussing between Boston and Worcester, round-trip shuttle between the Worcester “T” stop and the venue for commuter rail riders, and an event rideshare board resource; in addition to collecting and coalescing all transport information, train times, bus schedules etc. into one place for easy reference. We will be posting all of this information in a separate announcement once it’s been finalized. Additionally we will be organizing a community art truck to transport art to and from the venue.

2016 Art Theme: Da Vinci’s Pawnshop!

2016 Theme: Da Vinci's PawnshopAway from the extravagant architecture lining the thoroughfares of the nobility class, whose finely appointed estates were adorned with master craftworks and oil paintings of great patronage, there existed a seedier, less celebrated pocket of Renaissance Florence. A different kind of place with its own distinct economy and a unique art culture. One which did not exist under the thumb of the tastemaker Medici family and their grand bank, nor the Church and the gaze of their pious supervision. A different kind of place for a more common class of artist and maker, but this place too was no less familiar to Leonardo da Vinci, for it was here that those missing and scarcely known pages of his now famous notebooks ended up. Here holds a trove of forgotten works and questionable ideas which couldn’t quite find a receptive audience among the Florencian upper crust, and were resigned to sit upon pawn shop shelves. Inspired from these humble corners of Florence we bring to you a Renaissance for the rest of us! A celebration of the rough drafts, half baked designs, unwonted artworks, ill-conceived contraptions and art for art’s sake. Where the truly ahead of their time inventions go straight from the workshop to the bargain bin of Da Vinci’s Pawnshop!

Pawnshops have always been a place where your wildest dreams could soar, reaching the lofty heights of the interest rate attached to the collaterally secured short-term loan you took out to fund them. In this day and age when many large scale art projects are primarily funded by either wealthy patrons, the crowd funding masses or both, each with their own ideas about value and return, what is put up as collateral, what debt is owed, what bargains are made to secure these dreams?

Inventors, traders, tinkerers, bargain hunters and deal makers alike take note: on Saturday, October 22nd we will collectively enter into the pawn shop game as Boston Decompression 2016 brings “Da Vinci’s Pawnshop” to life at The WorcShop makerspace in Worcester, Massachusetts! It will be a monumental undertaking to make this event happen, but just wait till you hear the rock-bottom deal we got: all we have to do is provide everything! A small ask for an all-volunteer event like ours! To that end an official call for participation for art, music, performance, volunteers and theme camps will be released very shortly, as well as an opportunity to receive grant funding for art, music and performance costs. More event details including ticket sales are forthcoming so keep your eyes on these channels for more updates!

Boston Decompression 2016: Save the Date! ...and a New Venue

Huge possibilities open up with an October decom in a new Venue

Save the Date!

The 2016 Boston Decompression planning committee has been hard at work in full reconnaissance mode scouring both the calendar and the metro-city-area, and even well beyond. We are very excited to announce that the date for Boston Decompression 2016 will be: Saturday October 22nd, 2016!

This year’s event will see us move away from our home of the last four years, out from the shade of Fenway, the heart of the city. With this momentous transition comes not just a return to an October date, but the promise of extraordinary potential, freedom and possibilities not fully realized at our decompressions for many years now! Think a larger indoor/outdoor multifaceted and varied-use facility, think a bigger event, think higher ceilings, think larger art, think more performances, think longer hours, think later dancing, think hot food, think aerial silks and circus performances, think theme camps, think flames! The planning committee is absolutely ecstatic to announce that Boston Decompression 2016 will be held at The WorcShop in Worcester, MA! Our industrious planners are already working hard on the logistical challenges all these new and exciting potentials bring, including group transport abilities for art and participants. Many more announcements are forthcoming including this year’s art theme, and an opportunity to receive grant funding for art, projects, deco and performance costs. Keep yourself locked into these channels, and start dreaming big!

If you would like to get involved in the monumental logistical planning task of this event, please send us an email with your interest to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Thank You Boston Decompression 2015: Mimesis!

We just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who came out to Boston Decompression 2015: Mimesis and also thank everyone who was involved in making this event the huge success that it was! It was an incredible night filled with joy and laughter, music and art, creativity and community. So many people stepped up to contribute their art, share a performance and volunteer their time and energy to make Mimesis happen. All of that hard work was reflected back in one truly amazing night! Thank you all so so much!

As you can imagine, planning an event like this involves many different artists, various performers, contributors of all kinds, and volunteers; it takes a lot of time and organizing effort. Typically a group assembles anew in June to begin planning the Boston Decompression event, and those planning organizers work through the summer and fall, right up to the event date and beyond. A good number of creative and courageous people are involved in this planning effort. They are dedicated, hard working and eminently capable people who volunteer their time, energy and personal skill sets to make Boston Decompression happen. But as Boston Decompression grows in size and complexity there is always room for more planning help and fresh ideas. So if you think you’d be interested in stepping up to fill a planning role for the next Boston Decompression event, we would love to have you on the planning committee! Please fill out your name and email in this linked form and we will be sure to email you around June of next year to let you know when and where the first planning meeting will take place so that you can join and get involved from the start!

http://ow.ly/Us2TV

In the next week we will be sending out a link to a survey to gather more info on this year’s Decom, this will help us as we plan future events. Please respond when you you receive the email or see the link on Facebook. Your thoughts and opinions will help us immensely.

Anyone that took photos or video at Mimesis that would like to share them with us and allow us to post some of them to our Decompression page on the Black Rock East website, please email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Lastly, below is a list of “lost and found” items that were left at the venue. Please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or on our Facebook page if any of the items belong to you.

Ok, until next year, when we endeavor to do this all again!

WARNING: COUNTERFEIT MIMESIS TICKETS ARE CIRCULATING!!!

Ticketing Fraud!ATTENTION all those attending Boston Decompression 2015: Mimesis! We have just received confirmation that a group of imposters are selling counterfeit tickets to Mimesis! Please be wary when purchasing any physical ticket from any individual claiming to be an official representative of Boston Decompression: Mimesis. These fraudulent tickets may appear totally legit at first view, but in many cases they are actually counterfeit replicas of the real thing. If you suspect that you might be in possession of a counterfeit ticket, we urge you to please take a photo of yourself with the questionable ticket and SEND YOUR PHOTO TO US at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. We will use your photo to verify the authenticity of the ticket and also confirm the real identity of the individual who bought the ticket. NOTE: If your ticket is found to be counterfeit, or you yourself are confirmed to be an imposter we will repost your photo on our website and event pages to warn others! Don’t let this happen to you!

100% AUTHENTIC TICKETS TO MIMESIS CAN BE PURCHASED HERE:

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/boston-decompression-2015-mimesis-tickets-18986075864

We first became aware of a potential counterfeit operation when Homeland Security tipped us off to some strange online activity originating out of Cuba. After having an individual send us an authentication photo we realized we were dealing with a real fraud. However, it wasn’t until we got another confirmed case, this time right in the metro-Boston area involving a counterfeit ticket in the possession of a cat, that we realized we may have a much bigger problem on our hands. We need your photos to help us determine the size and scale of this counterfeit-imposter operation, so please send us your photo!

Photo identification of these first two confirmed imposters can be seen at the following link on our website, and additional photos sent to us will be posted there. Please take a look, as these photos may help you in determining the true originals from the inauthentic as we go forward:

http://blackrockeast.com/index.php/item/mimesis-counterfeits-and-impostors

Please get your tickets to Mimesis NOW, and beware of imitations and impostors!
